Breakfast: Winter Porridge

Sunday, November 30, 2014

In the cold winter months there is nothing I enjoy more than getting up in the morning and starting my day with a nice warm bowl of porridge. It's the most comforting breakfast ever and it gives you all the energy you need to start your day right! Recently I changed my usual 'recipe' up a bit to what I like to call my winter porridge. Here's how I make it:

You'll need (for one bowl):

1 apple
50 - 60g oats (depending on how hungry you are obviously so by all means add more if you feel like it)
~ 100 ml organic almond milk
cinnamon
matcha powder

acacia honey

Chop your apple into small pieces. Take a small pot and fill with a little bit of water (the bottom of the pot should be covered well by it) then add your apples and bring to a boil. Let them boil til the apple pieces are all soft (depending on the apples you used this will take 5 - 10 minutes) then pour through a sieve and your apple pieces can go into your breakfast bowl.
Now its time to pour your milk and oats into the pot and stir continuously on a medium heat. Once the porridge has your desired consistency take it off the heat and pour it on top of your apples. Sprinkle with as much cinnamon and matcha powder as you like and sweeten with some acacia honey.

Et voilà! Your wintery breakfast porridge is all ready for you :)

As oats are rich in fibre and complex carbohydrates they provide a slow release of energy over the morning, which means they'll keep you going for longer and you won't be craving quick-release sugary foods so much anymore. Oats are also a good place to get protein and vitamin B1 from. So porridge is an all round perfect breakfast!

So this is my favourite breakfast on cold winter mornings, but what is yours? Do you have any delicious breakfast recipes you'd like to share?

Love,
Jess x
