"Beautiful, rich, mysterious... the Roanoke girls seem to have it all. But there's a dark truth about them that's never spoken. Every girl either runs away, or dies."

Well, if this doesn't make you want to take that book home and get reading immediately, I don't know what's wrong with you! I stumbled across it while browsing one of our local bookshops with absolutely no intention of buying yet another book as I still have a not so tiny to-be-read-pile waiting for me back home. But I couldn't have left this one behind could I have?

The story follows Lane, one of the infamous Roanoke girls, who has to return to the Roanoke estate in rural Kansas due to her cousin Allegra going missing. The Roanoke estate is a massive country house and farm run by Lane's and Allegra's grandparents and pretty far out in the dusty Kansas countryside of Osage Flats. Lane used to spend one long hot summer at her grandparent's when she was fifteen and had to leave New York behind after her mother died. The story skips back and forth between 'Then', being that summer when Lane and Allegra were teenagers and spend the summer together at Roanoke and 'Now', meaning Lane's return to the estate and her quest of finding out the truth of what happened to her cousin.

As the story unfolds we learn more and more about what happened back in the summer Lane spent living in Kansas and what initially made her run from that place, swearing she'd never come back. We find out what it means to be a Roanoke girl and what happened to all the ones who came before Lane and Allegra. And the more we learn, the more we know that being back at this place is dangerous for Lane in multiple ways.

This book had me from page one! The skipping back and forth through time made it all the more interesting to me and all the different characters seemed so real to me! Lane for example is not what I'd describe as a likable character, she's really quite difficult, struggling with life which is obviously due to all the things she experienced in life and she doesn't tend to treat people very nicely at all. However we find out a lot about what made her this way and also see a different side of her in the 'Then' parts of the story. Allegra on the other hand is the perfect counterpart for Lane, as she's such a vibrant character with all her quirks and temper tantrums.

I would like to say so much more! But whatever else I'd say now it would spoil it for you! Just this much: read this book! It got everything: mystery, crime, drama, love, sex and an insight into the darkest parts of people's souls. I have finished this book a couple of days ago now and I'm still thinking about it, that is definitely a sign of a good book.

I'd rate this book a solid  ★★★★✩
